ABSTRACT: Clouds play an important role in atmospheric processes involving the scattering and absorption of radiation. In this context, the proper cloud classification is essential for understanding such processes and geostationary satellites are valuable tools. The objective of this study was to evaluate and improve the cloud classifier kept in operation by the Center for Weather Forecasting and Climate Studies of National Institute for Space Research (CPTEC/INPE) and develop a new classifier exploring new channels in ABI/GOES-16 sensor. Images from ABI/GOES-16 sensor were used for the period between January 2019 and December 2020. The operational classifier was evaluated and improved at the three available times, 12:00, 15:00, and 18:00 UTC images of channels 0.64 and 10.3 μm from ABI/GOES-16 sensor was used. In addition, the classifiers were compared to three cloud products provided by NOAA: cloud top temperature, cloud top phase, and cloud mask in order to observe the classifiers behavior to the thermodynamic characteristics of clouds. It was observed that some targets had an improvement in the identification of approximately 3%, as is the case of cirrus clouds. Other targets, such as cumulus clouds, had similar identification in both classifiers. Due to many possible parameters to develop the new classifier, the PCA technique was applied to reduce the parameters, resulting in 12 (channels 0.64, 1.37, 6.2 8.4, 10.3 μm, texture of the channels 0.64, 6.2, 10.3 μm, and the spectral differences 6.2-10.3, 11.2-12.3, 11.2-3.9 and 3.9-12.3 μm). In comparison with NOAA products, it was verified a high consistency of the clouds thermodynamic characteristics, observing an improvement up to 15% in the categorization of cirrus, stratus, and multilayer clouds. On the other hand, the surface continental and oceanic identification was similar to the operational and update classifiers in the three times available. The new classifier based on 12 parameters, presented an improvement to the original classifiers, based on 4 parameters, however, adjustments are still needed. |
