AbstractIn mature tropical forest, vegetation demands for nutrients are supplied largely tbrough reeycling -within the ecosystern. Nutrient accurnulation during forest aggradation depends on supply rates from externai sources (weathering, deposition, and for N, hiological fixation), loss rates (occlusion, leaching, and volatilization), and the capacity of the ecosystem to entram n nutrients with interna! cycles. If the rnature forest remains undisturbed nutrient fluxes through the system will be roughly proportional to supply rates frotn externai sources. Disturbance results in losses and redistribution of nutrients within the system, the magnitude of which is determined by the nature of the disturbance. Consequently, the quantity of nutrients lost and the sources of nutrient re-supply limit Forest re-growth. We apply a process-based model of ecosystem biogeochemistry (MBL-GEM) to evaluate losses and redistribution of nutrients consequent to forest clearing, and biogeochemical controls over forest re-growth on a typical Amazonian terra firme. Disturbances of varying magnitude and frequency are considered, including bole wood removal and burning.
