%0 Journal Article %X The proper disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW) is a global challenge, mainly in developing countries. The objective of this paper is to review recent improvements and remaining challenges of municipal solid waste disposal (MSWD) in Brazil focusing on the environmental impacts caused by inappropriate disposal of MSW. Before the implementation of the Brazilian Solid Waste Policy (BSWP), in 2008, 72.3% of all municipalities in Brazil disposed of their MSW in open dumps and uncontrolled landfills. In 2015, after the deadline given by the BSWP to close all open dumps and uncontrolled landfills had expired, 60% of all Brazilian municipalities still dispose their MSW improperly. Therefore, while progress occurred in the management practices for MSWD in Brazil, the improvements have not occurred as fast as expected by the BSWP and several shortcomings remain, which cause significant environmental impacts. %N 3 %9 journal article %T Municipal solid waste disposal in Brazil: Improvements and challenges %@electronicmailaddress victor.nascimento@inpe.br %@electronicmailaddress anahi.sobral@inpe.br %@electronicmailaddress prosec22@yahoo.com %@electronicmailaddress nyesille@calpoly.edu %@electronicmailaddress pedro.andrade@inpe.br %@electronicmailaddress jean.ometto@inpe.br %@nexthigherunit 8JMKD3MGPCW/3F3T29H %@nexthigherunit 8JMKD3MGPCW/449U4PL %@secondarytype PRE PI %K municipal solid waste generation, municipal solid waste management, MSWM, landfill, open dumps, environmental impact, Brazil. %@usergroup self-uploading-INPE-MCTI-GOV-BR %@usergroup simone %@group %@group CST-CST-SESPG-INPE-MCTIC-GOV-BR %@group %@group %@group COCST-COCST-INPE-MCTIC-GOV-BR %@group COCST-COCST-INPE-MCTIC-GOV-BR %@tertiarymark 8JMKD3MGP3W34P/3NM7S2P %@issn 1478-9876 %2 sid.inpe.br/mtc-m21c/2019/05.03.18.05.44 %@affiliation Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) %@affiliation Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE) %@affiliation Universidade Federal de Uberlândia (UFU) %@affiliation Global Waste Research Institute (GWRI) %@affiliation Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE) %@affiliation Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE) %B International Journal of Environment and Waste Management %@versiontype publisher %P 300-318 %4 sid.inpe.br/mtc-m21c/2019/05.03.18.05 %@documentstage not transferred %D 2019 %V 23 %@doi 10.1504/IJEWM.2019.099007 %A Nascimento, Victor Fernandes, %A Sobral, Anahi Chimini, %A Fehr, Manfred, %A Yesiller, Nazli, %A Andrade Neto, Pedro Ribeiro de, %A Ometto, Jean Pierre Henry Balbaud, %@dissemination SCOPUS %@area CST %@holdercode {isadg {BR SPINPE} ibi 8JMKD3MGPCW/3DT298S}
