This version of the compilation, starting in 1997, now extends to 2021, which is important for the validation of the most recent satellite optical sensors such as Sentinel 3B OLCI and NOAA-20 VIIRS. The data set comprises in situ observations of the following variables: spectral remote-sensing reflectance, concentration of chlorophyll-a, spectral inherent optical properties, spectral diffuse attenuation coefficient, and total suspended matter. Data were obtained from multi-project archives acquired via open internet services or from individual projects acquired directly from data providers. Methodologies were implemented for homogenization, quality control, and merging of all data. Minimal changes were made on the original data, other than conversion to a standard format, elimination of some points, after quality control and averaging of observations that were close in time and space. The result is a merged table available in text format. Overall, the size of the data set grew with 148 432 rows, with each row representing a unique station in space and time (cf. 136 250 rows in previous version; Valente et al., 2019). Observations of remote-sensing reflectance increased to 68 641 (cf. 59 781 in previous version; Valente et al., 2019). There was also a near tenfold increase in chlorophyll data since 2016. Metadata of each in situ measurement (original source, cruise or experiment, principal investigator) are included in the final table. By making the metadata available, provenance is better documented and it is also possible to analyse each set of data separately. %@area SRE %@electronicmailaddress adovalente@fc.ul.pt %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress %@electronicmailaddress milton.kampel@inpe.br %@documentstage not transferred %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group %@group DIDSR-CGOBT-INPE-MCTIC-GOV-BR %@dissemination PORTALCAPES %@usergroup simone %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid %@resumeid 8JMKD3MGP5W/3C9JHTG %@affiliation Universidade de Lisboa %@affiliation Plymouth Marine Laboratory %@affiliation Universidade de Lisboa %@affiliation Plymouth Marine Laboratory %@affiliation Plymouth Marine Laboratory %@affiliation EUMETSAT %@affiliation Sorbonne Université %@affiliation University of Southern Mississippi %@affiliation Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences %@affiliation ARGANS Ltd %@affiliation Bayworld Centre for Research and Education %@affiliation Université du Québec à Rimouski %@affiliation European Commission, Joint Research Centre %@affiliation Dokuz Eylul University %@affiliation Institute of Marine Research %@affiliation Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research %@affiliation CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere %@affiliation European Commission, Joint Research Centre %@affiliation Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute %@affiliation PLOCAN – Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands %@affiliation Sorbonne Université %@affiliation CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere %@affiliation Naval Research Laboratory %@affiliation University of California San Diego %@affiliation Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) %@affiliation University of the Highlands and Islands %@affiliation Naval Research Laboratory %@affiliation NASA Goddard Space Flight Center %@affiliation University of California San Diego %@affiliation Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE) %@affiliation Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency %@affiliation Stockholm University %@affiliation University of California Santa Cruz %@affiliation Instituto del Mar del Perú %@affiliation Université du Littoral-Côte-d’Opale %@affiliation Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences %@affiliation University of Strathclyde %@affiliation University of California San Diego %@affiliation NASA Goddard Space Flight Center %@affiliation University of South Florida %@affiliation Fisheries and Ecosystem Advisory Services, Marine Institute %@affiliation NOAA/NESDIS/STAR/SOCD %@affiliation Plymouth Marine Laboratory %@affiliation Heriot-Watt University %@affiliation 9IFREMER Centre de Brest %@affiliation CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere %@affiliation Plymouth Marine Laboratory %@affiliation National Oceanography Centre %@affiliation Biology Department, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution %@affiliation Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute %@affiliation Sorbonne Université %@affiliation University of Miami %@affiliation NASA Goddard Space Flight Center %@affiliation Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research %@affiliation Australian Antarctic Division and the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre %@affiliation European Commission, Joint Research Centre %@versiontype publisher %@holdercode {isadg {BR SPINPE} ibi 8JMKD3MGPCW/3DT298S} %@doi 10.5194/essd-14-5737-2022
